Our Troop's Own Disc Golf Badges

Another leader and myself recently wrote a set of badges to explore the world of Disc Golf for our Girl Scout Troop. We have decided to share these badges with any troop that might be interested in completing these badges. We have had enough interest in these generated to have these badges professionally made and we will be happy to offer them to any troop interested in pursuing these badges. You may order the badges for any level by contacting me. Cost is $1.50 per badge.

For those of you who may not know what Disc Golf is, it is a relatively modern organized sport played similar to golf but it is played with a disc or Frisbee and the goal is to have the fewest number of throws to get the disc into the basket. It has evolved over the past 40 years or so since the invention of the Frisbee in 1964 into a sport with a competitive nature. The first basket was patented in 1975 and the first official course was also built in 1975 in Pasadena. This was also the year that the Professional Disc Golf Association was created.

There are approximately 1000 disc golf courses in the United States with over 20,000 professional players. In 2002 the World Championship was held in Charlotte NC with over 350 contestants and a winning purse of $64,000. Amazingly to many people this is still an unheard of sport hence the desire to share with other scouts what my girls thoroughly enjoy. To find a course in your area visit Disc Golf Course locator. Many of the courses are free to play on and are located in city or state parks making this a very inexpensive hobby. It is designed to be played by any and all ages with as much or as little expense as you wish to put into it. It can be played with your basic generic Frisbee or you may choose to purchase an official disc for playing. As with any sport, the professionals tend to have an array of discs for the variety of shots they make. Some discs veer to the left when thrown, some to the right. Some are designed to cut through underbrush, others to glide. The main thing to remember is, its not necessary to have an expensive disc to enjoy the game of disc golf.

By following the links you will be able to find the requirements for the Disc Golf Brownie Tryit, the Junior Disc Golf Badge, and the Cadette/Senior Disc Golf IPP. For ordering information for these badges please feel free to email me. Now go out and have a very enjoyable relaxing day tossing a disc (or Frisbee) at a target
