The Joys of Girl Scouts
Girl Scouting can be a wonderful experience for those who choose to make it so. I can't count the number of times I have had adults tell me they were in scouts as girl and had a wonderful leader who made a difference. I have also had adults tell me they dropped out as a junior or cadette because they never did anything except crafts or sitting around or parties. Well that's not my girls. Our troop is all older girls now, ranging in age from age 13 and up. While its not considered "cool" to be a Girl Scout in middle or high school some girls choose to stay with it. Why you may ask. Well in my troops case its because its a place they can unwind and socialize. They can also do a lot of fun things like go ice skating, bowling, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, scuba diving, camping, caving, and take trips. Yes I said take trips. Not just day trips but extended 3-5 day trips or more. Am I crazy to take 8-10 teen age girls on trips? Probably... We took them to Washington DC in 2002 when they were younger and the summer of 2005 we went to Hershey PA for 5 days. What's next on the agenda? Who knows. It might be a trip to Cedar Point or to Florida or any of a number of other places but I am sure that we have a few weekend trips before that. I know snowboarding, tubing and skiing are on the agenda for the wintertime. Lots of fun things to do. Now if we could only find the time and the money to do them.
